Editorial Standards & Ethics

How we research, fact-check, and publish. Our commitment to accuracy, transparency, and independence.

Editorial Independence

No paid placements or advertiser influence on editorial content.

Cited Sources

Every article is built on named, verifiable public reporting and industry data.

No Fabrication

We do not invent statistics, quotes, events, or expert credentials.

Our Byline

Everything on Like Hot Cakes is published under a single byline: Like Hot Cakes Editorial. We do not attach individual expert personas or credentials to our articles. We believe analysis should stand or fall on the quality of its sourcing and reasoning — not on claimed résumés. If we ever add individually bylined contributors, they will be real, named, verifiable people.

Research & Sourcing

Our analysis is built on publicly available reporting and data. Before an article is published, the following standards must be met:

  • Named sources: Claims about industry events, deals, and financial data are drawn from published trade reporting (Music Business Worldwide, Billboard, Digital Music News, and others), official industry reports, and public filings — and the source is identified.
  • No fabrication: We do not invent statistics, quotes, events, company actions, or study results. If we cannot source a figure, we do not use one.
  • Analysis clearly framed: Where we go beyond the sourced facts, it is presented as our interpretation and argument, not as reported fact.
  • Contextual accuracy: We provide context for figures and claims, including time periods, geographic scope, and methodology where applicable.
  • Source diversity: We aim to present multiple perspectives on complex issues and acknowledge where reasonable people disagree.

Editorial Review Process

Before publication, each article is checked against our standards:

  1. Sourcing check: Factual claims are traced back to the underlying published source.
  2. Standards review: Content is reviewed for clarity, fairness, and adherence to this policy. Unsubstantiated claims are removed.
  3. Post-publication corrections: If an error is identified after publication, we correct it promptly and note the correction.

Independence & Conflicts of Interest

Like Hot Cakes maintains strict editorial independence. Our policies include:

  • No pay-for-play: We do not accept payment in exchange for favorable coverage. Advertising and sponsored content are clearly labeled and never influence editorial decisions.
  • Disclosure: If a writer has a material connection to a company or individual mentioned in an article (former employer, current client, financial interest), the relationship is disclosed within the article.
  • Separation of advertising and editorial: Advertisers have no input on editorial content, story selection, or editorial direction.
  • Gift policy: Writers decline gifts, free trips, and other perks from industry sources that could create a conflict of interest or the appearance of one.
  • Per-article disclosure: Every article includes an editorial disclosure statement confirming the absence of paid placements, affiliate links, or advertiser influence.

How We Fund Our Work

Like Hot Cakes is independently operated and funded through:

  • Newsletter sponsorships: Clearly labeled sponsor messages within our email newsletter.
  • Display advertising: Non-intrusive display ads on the website, clearly separated from editorial content.
  • Partnership programs: Sponsored content and co-branded reports, always clearly labeled as such.

None of these revenue streams influence our editorial coverage. Our editorial team makes all content decisions independently, and advertisers do not receive advance notice of editorial content or have any ability to influence story selection, conclusions, or recommendations.

Updates & Corrections

We are committed to accuracy and transparency in our corrections process:

  • Corrections: When we identify a factual error in a published article, we correct it promptly and add a correction note at the bottom of the article explaining what was changed and when.
  • Updates: When industry developments make previously published information outdated, we update the article and note the update date. All articles display a "Last reviewed" date indicating when the content was last verified for accuracy.
  • Reader reports: We encourage readers to report potential errors through our contact page. All error reports are investigated and addressed within 48 hours.
  • Transparency log: Substantive corrections are documented publicly. We believe that a willingness to correct mistakes openly is a mark of editorial integrity, not weakness.

Content Scope & Limitations

Like Hot Cakes provides analysis and commentary on the business of music. Our content is:

  • Informational, not advisory: Our articles are intended for general informational purposes. They should not be construed as professional financial, legal, or business advice. Readers should consult qualified professionals before making business decisions.
  • Industry-focused: We cover the business and strategy of the music industry. We do not cover music reviews, celebrity gossip, or personal lives of industry figures.
  • Forward-looking statements: When we discuss industry trends or make projections, these represent informed analysis based on available data and professional experience, not guarantees of future outcomes.

Questions About This Policy

If you have questions about our editorial standards, want to report an error, or wish to discuss a potential conflict of interest, please contact our editorial team. We take all inquiries seriously and aim to respond within two business days.
